DURHAM — Carolina Public Press, North Carolina’s nonprofit, independent, nonpartisan newsroom today announced it has been awarded a grant from Press Forward via The Miami Foundation in the amount of $100,000.00 over two years, as part of the Closing Local Coverage Gaps open call.

The grant will support CPP’s efforts to increase government openness and accountability through its in-depth, investigative, public interest journalism.

CPP is one of 205 small, local news outlets — including at least one in every US state — that are receiving a share of $20 million to close persistent coverage gaps, thanks to funding from Press Forward, the nationwide movement to strengthen communities by reinvigorating local news.

“Receiving this grant is a transformative opportunity for our organization,” said Lisa Lopez, Carolina Public Press interim executive director.

“It not only validates the hard work and dedication of our team but also reinforces our commitment to public service journalism across North Carolina. With this support, we can serve more overlooked and underserved communities, expand issue-related civil dialogue through virtual — and future live — events that encourage in-depth, nonpartisan conversations with the public, build on our collaboration plans and explore innovative, nontraditional ways to reach our audience.

“We are immensely grateful to Press Forward for believing in our vision and partnering with us to strengthen democracy and make a difference in North Carolina.”
