MARION — Duane Terrell is the new administrator at Marion Correctional Institution, a facility that houses approximately 800 close and minimum custody male inmates and has 385 officers and other staff members.
He was previously the facility’s assistant superintendent for custody and operations, and succeeds the retired Sid Harkleroad. Terrell has spent his 28-year career at Marion Correctional, beginning in August 1983 as a correctional officer. He was promoted to assistant superintendent in 2003.
Terrell has completed the Department of Correction’s professional leadership development program. He is also a trained correctional and firearms instructor.
The new administrator has studied at McDowell Community College and N.C. State University.
Terrell and his wife, Debbie, have three children, Lindsey, Lauren and Wil. He enjoys family time, golf and playing bluegrass music.
