Full Disclosure workshops to be held April 3-5 across WNC

In honor of Sunshine Week in North Carolina, Carolina Public Press announces it will hold its second-annual “Full Disclosure” workshop series at three locations across Western North Carolina from April 3-5.

The series will give journalists, students, public information officers, civic leaders and citizens access to essential tools, guides and instruction needed to understand and access public records and data at the local, state and federal levels.

To be held UNC Asheville, Western Carolina University and Appalachian State University, the workshops features presenters Amanda Martin, N.C. Press Association general counsel; Jon Elliston, CPP’s investigations and open government editor; and Angie Newsome, CPP’s executive director. Carolina Public Press is the region’s only nonprofit online news service devoted to unbiased, in-depth and investigative reporting as well as education opportunities to journalists, students and others.

Presenters will offer key information, tools and techniques on:

  • What records are public according to state and federal public records laws;
  • How to combat challenges to getting information at the local, state and federal levels; and
  • Tips for crafting successful requests and publishing the results.

In addition to the training, each session includes a one-hour social and networking event where participants can further discuss issues related to open government, data and records. The presenters will be available to answer questions.

Registration is required. General admission for the training and networking event is $30. Admission is free for UNCA, WCU and ASU students with a student ID and advance registration. Seating is limited and early registration is encouraged.
