Before you go …
If you like what you are reading and believe in independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan journalism like ours—journalism the way it should be—please contribute to keep us going. Reporting like this isn’t free to produce and we cannot do this alone. Thank you!
The Western North Carolina-based nonprofit news service, Carolina Public Press, seeks experienced freelance journalists (reporters, data visualizers, photojournalists, multimedia reporters) to join its award-winning team. Carolina Public Press is Western North Carolina’s only nonprofit news organization devoted to nonpartisan, in-depth and investigative news.
We seek high-quality, experienced and aggressive journalists with a strong interest in and/or experience with using state and federal public records and open government laws.
Freelancers should also live either within North Carolina’s 18 westernmost counties or within driving distance of the N.C. State Capitol and have 3-5 years experience in a deadline-driven news environment.
Pay is competitive, based on accepted story assignments, with stipends available for approved expenses. Assignments are available on a range of public-interest topics, from the environment to health care, from local, regional and state politics to the economy and from short-term to project-level, enterprise assignments.
