Editor’s note: This is a historic post and is being updated to comply with later guidelines for search-engine-optimization as part of Carolina Public Press‘ archives of its older posts. In 2016, Gov. Pat McCrory, R-Charlotte, sought re-election. He faced a challenge from longtime N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper, D-Fayetteville, as well as a Libertarian candidate, Lon Cecil. This debate from October 2016 comes a few weeks before voters went to the polls and elect the Democrat Cooper, despite also awarding the state’s electoral votes to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. The same result repeated four years later when Cooper fended off a re-election challenge from Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Forrest at the same time Trump received the state’s electoral votes in 2020, though Trump ultimately fell short in his re-election bid that year.
