ASHEVILLE — From Emily Dickinson to foreign policy issues, learning opportunities will abound when the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement’s nationally noted College for Seniors begins its summer session at UNC Asheville. Registration will open at 8 a.m. on May 17 at UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center.
Classes will be held June 20 through Aug. 3, and 40 courses are offered. The full course catalog is available online; no tests or grades are given. Topics include world history, astronomy, art, psychology, wellness and recreation, personal development, and more. Appalachian Studies courses, some of which include field trips, will delve into the history, culture and ecology of the region.
Retired Air Force Brigadier General Jerome Jones will team up with historian Mary Lasher to teach “The News Today,” which will focus on international events. In “The Faces of Emily Dickinson,” Oxford University-educated artist, writer and educator Ellen Beinhorn will use portraits of Dickinson as a springboard for exploration of the poet’s life.
Some summer courses will feature small group learning circles where participants share life experiences in a facilitated conversation group. Others, like “Yoga for Healthy Backs,” “Beginning Mac,” and “Investing: Past, Present, and Your Future,” focus on the practical.
Cost for the College for Seniors summer session is $75 for up to three courses. Additional courses may be added, without cost, after confirmation and schedules have been assigned. Wellness and recreation courses have an additional $20 fee. Classes are open to members of the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement; the annual membership fee is $60. Membership benefits include a campus parking permit, access to the University library, discounts on special events and more.
Class size is limited; early registration is suggested. For the online course catalog, registration and more information, visit http://www2.unca.edu/ncccr/or call (828) 251-6140.
