“The New Appalachia,” an evening of poetry, music and history, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Western Carolina University’s Mountain Heritage Center.
The free program will feature George Frizzell, a historian and director of WCU’s Office of Special Collections; Angela Faye Martin, a singer-songwriter and recording artist; Michael Revere, a poet and drummer; and Thomas Rain Crowe, a poet and publisher. Everyone attending will receive a free copy of Revere’s book “Appalachian Roots.”
The program, sponsored by the Mountain Heritage Center and subtitled “No More Moonshine, Li’l Abners and Daisy Maes,” was designed as a “celebration of all things Appalachian – past and present – with an emphasis on the present day,” Revere said.
“The shadowy history of the Southern mountains’ dark corners and characters has been over-emphasized. Our show on Dec. 8 has more to do with present-day realities and those parts of the mountains where the sun shines and people accept the outside world as being as viable and important as the hollers and hills where they call home. We want to celebrate this shift of history and consciousness as explored through the creative mediums of words and music.”
During his part of the program, Frizzell, a Jackson County native, will talk about classic rock ‘n’ roll and its possible, and imagined, influences on the history of Southern Appalachian music and culture.
Although the program is free, donations will be accepted and given to the Charles George Veterans Administration Medical Center in Asheville.
