Because Congress has not passed a bill to reform No Child Left Behind, the Obama administration says it will grant qualifying states waivers to the law’s requirements. A Carolina Public Press data analysis indicated 56 percent of the schools in Western North Carolina did not make Adequate Yearly Progress under the federal statute’s grading system.

Quake in Virginia felt across region
The Charlotte region and much of the Carolinas were rattled Tuesday afternoon by a strong earthquake centered near Richmond. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had an intensity of 5.9 — unusually strong for the eastern United States — and took place at 1:51 p.m. It was centered at 37.8 degrees north and 77.9 degrees west.

North Carolina organizations comprised of youths age 13 to 18 can apply for mini-grants of up to $500 each. Previous projects that received funds include after-school tutorial programs, an alcohol-free graduation celebration and books for children in a hospital critical care unit.
